Having a fun summer?

Having a fun summer? I am!

The sectionals have been going pretty well, with good attendance so far. Keep it up!

A few items for all winds and brass:
-Star Spangled Banner and Mobbusters are to be memorized by band camp
-All section leaders should now have Meeting at Tryon Palace and Gabriel's Oboe. These are the full concert band versions, but they need to be learned anyway. I will have condensed marching band versions in the near future. We will be doing both pieces in their entirety at the winter concert.
-You should all work on the major scales in section 2 and 4 of Fussell, and will be getting section 5 at your next sectional.
-If you don't have a tuner, get one! You need to own one, they are cheap and will help you played dramatically better!!!!!!
-Make sure that when you are practicing you are practicing playing the pieces well. I have heard several individuals just blatting and tearing sloppily through pieces (particualarly Mobbusters). You are reinforcing bad playing, bad sound quality, and bad musicianship. Practice well and performing well will be a LOT easier.

Percussion:
-You will be getting Mobbusters this Monday (7-6-09) if you are in the battery.
-There will be a sectional on Monday 7-13-09 with me! Be there, we're doing something different!

Guard:
-Great attendance and I can already see growth from most of our newbies.
-Sectionals will continue on Tuesdays at 3:30

Thanks!

End of the Year

I figured I'd write one last blog before the school year is over. This week we have our annual play-a-thon at the McClatchy Auditorium. At 6:30 we will hold a public "concert" were we will play two pieces from our Fall 2008 show "Transcontinental." The color guard will also give a repeat performance of their now popular rendition of "Thriller."

Following the concert will be our annual year-end awards ceremony. We will hand out several different awards, honor our graduating seniors, honor our 2007-2008 section leaders, drum majors, and band board, announce our 2008-2009 section leaders, drum majors, and band booster board members, and recognize our instructors, volunteers, and other folks who've made this year possible.

This is the last week for our 2008 seniors. It is always a fun time of the year, while also a bit sad knowing that these wonderful young people are moving on to the rest of their lives. I only hope that they all come back at some point and say hi. They will always be welcome.

Next week is the graduation ceremony (June 6th) at Memorial Auditorium. The band will play the National Anthem, as well as the usual fare as the students and honoraries enter and exit the hall.

This summer, there will be several sectionals held at the school, others will be held at the section leader's homes. Band camp starts August 18th for Freshmen and Newbies, the 19th for the rest of the band. Band Camp will conclude on August 28th with the parent night performance.

Stay tuned for more. We'll get the calendar updated soon!
